My Philosophy
I am entering my professional career as a teacher and though I will not claim to be an expert teacher, I am motivated to make a meaningful impact on my students, my school, and my community. “In the long run, men hit only what they aim at. Therefore, though they should fail immediately, they had better aim at something high.” (Henry David Thoreau) I will continually look to progress as a professional, and I can do so by setting high expectations of myself and the student learning taking place in my classroom.
As a teacher in Health and Physical Education, I will use education and positive role modeling as a means to help youth in our challenging society to develop into active participating members of the community that are physically, socially, and mentally healthy. Through hard work and perseverance, I as a teacher can make a huge impact on the student’s lives. I will work towards embodying my lessons around the students to fit each individual, which in turn will empower them to make meaning of the content and apply the concepts to real life situations.
One key component to my success will be goal setting. Goals will be set as a group and as individuals. Each individual will be accountable for their own health and fitness and will work to improve these areas through goal setting. Students’ goals can be specific to themselves and should be based off of their fitness scores through our testing in Physical Education. Tests will be standards based and proven valid and reliable. Student will be given time to reflect and work towards their goals and will be consistently retested so they can monitor their progress. For Health, students will set both short term goals and lifetime goals for each unit.
Healthy decision-making will be one of the largest contributors to our health as individuals, as a class, and as a society. When leaving my class students will have the tools and education to make the right decisions in life. I want my students to develop and understand respect for one another and even more importantly, develop respect for themselves. Individuality will be a focus and I will do my absolute best to help students understand that believing in yourself and respecting yourself goes a long way. Having self-respect and a high self-esteem will help students build confidence, leading to self-identity, which will establish ground for who they strive to be everyday of their wonderful lives!
As a class, we will dream big, and it is my job to inspire and fuel the passion to achieve anything because anything is possible if the students believe. As far as being a healthy individual, it can be a tedious process and takes will and determination. One must not sit back and wonder upon the difficulty but instead work harder in the process to accomplish goals. Students must understand that failure occurs, which isn’t important or significant but how we respond is. A teacher who is truly dedicated will continually work to improve and build upon their lessons, modify their units, and reset their objectives to fit the unique needs of their students. I will set my goals high for myself and my students, follow what I preach, and help turn the corner for a brighter future for our youth!
